Thousands of students rallied today (December 31st) in campuses throughout Israel in a call to the people of Gaza to demand that their elected government cease its bombardment of Israeli towns. The Hamas government was democratically elected in January 2006 and has been assaulting Israeli towns and cities with hundreds of missiles since June 2004.
Rallies were held in Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Haifa, the Holon Institute of Technology, the Technion, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, the Ariel University Center of Samaria, and more. The rallies were organized in participation with National Union of Israeli Students, The Student Organization, The World Union of Jewish Students, StandWithUs International, “Students Lead”, “Im Tirzu”, and The National Student Initiative.
The students expressed their support for the civilians under fire in southern Israel and called upon their student counterparts in Gaza and throughout the world to take to the streets and demand of Hamas to stop their intentional and targeted assault on Israeli civilians. This is a blatant violation of International Law and basic human moral values.
Noy Dor one of the organizers of the rally explained “The Hamas government was democratically elected and the results of its decisions are the difficult pictures which we are witnessing on both sides of the border. Therefore we call upon the people in Gaza to demand of their Hamas government to cease its targeted rocket bombardment of Israeli civilians which only results in suffering for the both peoples – we stretch out our hand to the people of Gaza for peace.”
