A review of major news sources in Israel:

  • The IDF Spokespersons Office reports that attacks against soldiers and civilians have escalated since the Jewish New year.
  • Today, according to YNet’s online news, a Qassam rocket struck Ashkelon and several mortar shells were fired into residential areas bordering Gaza.
  • Arutz Sheva reports that a Grad missile struck near Ashdod.
  • JPost reports that Hamas promises more attacks.

Since Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New year, attacks have increased and every reliable source indicates they will continue. Civilian areas close to Gaza are being targeted by shorter-range mortar fire.

Overall, the level of attacks has not been this high since the end of Operation Cast Lead in January, 2009.

Since Saturday, September 4, 2010 19 rockets, missiles, and mortars have been fired from Gaza towards Israel.

Combined with other recent attacks throughout Israel that have resulted in the death of Israeli citizens, the prospects for genuine peace appear slim.
